Texas Holdem poker terminology

November 8th, 2008

For all you new players out there that are just getting in to poker, heres a list of common poker terms that you will need to know. These terms are good both online and in a normal card game with your buddies.

Limit Poker: This is poker with set limits. For example, a 1 dollar/2 dollar limit Holdem game only allows a raise a maximum of 2 dollars at a time before the flop until the river. This is the opposite of no limit Holdem where a player can raise any amount at any time. Real About basic low limit Holdem strategy

Position (early and late): This is where you are seated in comparison to the dealer button. Early position is the spot right after the big blind and strategically has the worst position on the board because this position must call before he knows what the other players will do. Late position is on or near the dealer button and is considered the best position because you get to see how the other players will act before you make a decision whether to play your hand or not.

Blind (Small blind/big blind): These are the ante for Texas Holdem Poker. The two players the left of the dealer must place the pre-determined amount before they have a chance to see the cards. If there is a raise and either of these players fail to call, their blind is forfeited.

Pre-flop: This is when all you have is the 2 cards in your hand and the cards on there have not been any community cards revealed.

Flop: this is the first three cards that are turned over after all bets have been made and or called.
Turn: This is the 4th card to be revealed in a game of Texas Holdem.
River: This is the last card to be revealed in a game of Texas Holdem.
Board Cards: These are the cards on the table that all players share and use to make their hands

Draw: A player is said to be on a draw if a player calls a bet in hopes that the next card will give him the winning hand. For example if a player has QK in his hand and the flop is 10 Jack 2, and the player calls a bet in hopes of a 9 or an Ace.

Outs: This is the number of cards that a player could draw in order to produce the winning hand. If the flop is QJ2 and a player has 10 9, he needs either a King or an 8 in order to complete a straight. There are 4 Kings and 4 eights in the deck leaving a total of 8 outs to make a straight.

Pot Odds:
This is the ratio of how large of a bet you must call to the size of the pot. If you are clearly behind in a hand but your opponent bets 1 dollar at a 100 dollar pot. It is worth risking one more dollar to see the next card that might win you a 100. But say your opponent bet 120 dollars at a hundred dollar pot, and you dont have a hand, it is not worth calling 120 dollars to see the next card.

Shorthand:
This is a game of poker that has less than 6 players.

Longhand:
This is a game that has at least seven players involved.

How Atlantic City became top gambling destination

October 5th, 2008

In 1978, Resorts International opened in Atlantic City, the first legal East Coast casino in the twentieth century. Their four- and six-deck blackjack games offered a new form of surrender, dubbed by card counters as “early surrender,” since the casino allowed players to surrender half a bet even when the dealer showed an ace or 10 up, and before the dealer checked for a blackjack. And, ironically, Resorts International was soon the most profitable casino in history, winning an average of $650,000 per day.

A team of professional blackjack players whose founders were from Czechoslovakia that had been playing in Las Vegas flew all of their members to Atlantic City to take advantage of this new surrender rule. This team, which later became known in the casino industry as simply the Czech Team, found the Resorts’ game to their liking and stayed for months.

Within a year, he had organized about twenty of his college and golfing buddies into a team of blackjack players. Hyland’s team continues to this day as one of the most successful casino gambling operations in history.

Johnny C.j now a legendary player who joined the team in 1981, plays high-stakes blackjack to this day and continues organizing teams of professional players. Many believe these teams owe their existence to the Resorts’ game with its early surrender rule that made the game so easy to beat. College kids found that they could pool their money, play blackjack with a modicum of intelligence, and get rich quick.

Early blackjack counting systems development

October 2nd, 2008

In the early 70th, Dr. Keith Taft began developing the first concealed blackjack computer, and soon, he had started using a computer in the Nevada casinos to play “unique” blackjack. He went on to develop dozens of concealable computers and other electronic devices over the next two decades, ever smaller and more powerful. Nevada had no laws at that time prohibiting the use of devices at their tables. Keith’s first computer weighed fifteen pounds.

Here’s how it worked on his blackjack strategies

This computer communicated its decisions to the player with buzzes and taps on the sole of the player’s foot. Using each of these devices wasn’t very easy task. It essentially entailed learning to “type” with your big toes. Even once you had memorized the codes, inputting them via the toe switches was a chore.

In the front side of each shoe there were two “switches”, or buttons - one above each big toe and one beneath - for a total of four switches. The computer itself was about the size of a pack of cigarettes, but thinner. Each switch conveyed a different code to the computer, which was a small epoxy-encased device that was strapped to the calf beneath the trousers. By using a series of toe taps, kind of like Morse code, the player could relay to the computer everything it needed to know in order to make a decision in a game of blackjack: which cards had already been dealt, what cards the player held, and the dealer’s upcard.

When reality and fantasy collide, something’s got to give

September 23rd, 2008

When you do start looking at the facts, the online casino games industry is maturing fast. As millions more players on cross-platforms start to play, the progressive jackpots will rise more quickly. There will be more big payouts. The trick is to keep the odds in perspective and never spend more than you can afford chasing the dream. Subject to that, it never hurts to drop a coin or two into one of the casino games. You never know, today might be your lucky day when fantasy does become reality and changes your life.

People are often seduced by the idea of something for nothing or at least very little. That is main cause they often drop a coin or two into a slot machine as they walk into a real world casino. The myths are “out there”.

So, our congratulations go to Rens.S. who, on the 1st February, was just $23,750 shy of $2.5m for a single spin of the wheels. Now, you might think this is a single system all on its own. It may be making big payouts, but not every progressive is making big payouts.

Well, meet Klaus E. from Finland. This April, he also became an instant millionaire. He risked an entire US$0.50 bet on the Mega-Moolah Progressive Slot Machine and managed to scoop $5.5m. That he was slightly surprised by his good fortune probably does not quite capture the moment. It is possible that he has resigned his job and is currently sitting on an island somewhere with a glass in one hand. What he has in his other hand is anyone’s guess.

Now we must all stay calm. For the record, Klaus was the thirteenth player to become an instant millionaire on this particular online progressive (let no-one say that thirteen is always an unlucky number). But, by any standards, a win of more than $5m is fairly impressive. It brings the total winnings since the system came online to $27m.

That last sentence puts the win in its proper context. There were twelve previous winners of more than $1m plus the latest win. That makes $17.7 as a minimum or less than $10m paid out to all the other jackpot winners over the last few years. The win of $5.5m is one of the largest the online industry has seen. It took months for the progressive to build up to that level. It took millions of “pulls”. There were an uncountable number of players who did not win.

Couple of Common Mistakes in Blackjack

September 19th, 2008

First common mistake beginners make is to stand too often on their stiff hands (12,13,14,15, and 16). Players are naturally afraid to hit these hands because every one of them could make a total of 22 or more with a single hit. But when the dealer has a high card (7, 8, 9,10, or ace) showing, your best odds of winning come from hitting and giving yourself a chance of making a better total.

There are some beginners who think the best way to play is to play the same way the dealer plays: Hit all sixteens and stand on all seventeens. This is not actually true. The object of the game is not to make a hand as close to 21 as possible, but to beat the dealer. Often the best way to do this is to stand with a low total, sometimes as low as 12.

A Good Tip: Here’s how many players think: If I hit this 14, I risk busting my hand right here and now. But maybe the dealer has a 6 in the hole. If I don’t take a hit, my hand still has a chance. Maybe the dealer’s hand will bust.

Every player on the table is afraid that he will be responsible for his own loss. You must fight for the hand’s survival by taking the hit, giving it a chance of becoming a stronger hand against that 10. With a 14 against a 10, you must fight to the death.

Second Common Mistake is that some beginners think the best way to play is to play the same way the dealer plays: Hit all sixteens and stand on all seventeens. The object of the game is not to make a hand as close to 21 as possible, but to beat the dealer. Often the best way to do this is to stand with a low total, sometimes as low as 12.

Useful Tip: This is the general logic of casino blackjack. But if you just consider this logic when studying the basic black jack strategy, the pattern will become clear to you and it should not be too difficult to memorize.

Video poker machines as they are

September 12th, 2008

Video poker machines lined up at the entrance to any casino are there only to take the money from suckers. They play to the their own greed, the get-rich-quick in the poor saps who can’t resist them. . . Poor losers. . . Keep hearing them complain they’re not winning enough. They return again and again to give more and more money to casinos. There’s only one thing you can say about these people. They have worked out the one important feature of the machines. There’s no need for the House to rig the machines. The casino operators are going to win in the long term without having to cheat. There’s no way they will spoil a sure thing by risking detection as a fraud by regulators. The House must always win. There will be times when players have a hot streak and it will seem like all the jackpots are falling. So let’s put those sore losers right. Then those streaks will go cold. That’s just the way statistics work their way to the one mathematical certainty. The House will win in the end.

Can it be better to gamble online?

September 1st, 2008

Online gambling You either got in your car or on an airplane, and went where people were playing casino online for real money, or you asked around and found out where the floating games were for that night. I guess when I was starting out, the illegal kind was always more exciting until you got to know everyone then it was down to a routine. After that, going to a real casino had the edge. But everything loses its shine eventually.

Another reason for the chinese Government’s action is protectionism that too many online dollars means less profit for the real world gaming establishments in the US.

So why should so many people play in online casinos? All you have are a few animated versions of the casino games that lack any sense of physical involvement. Worse, some of the games just are not the same. For example, thanks to the random number generator, counting the cards in online blackjack is a waste of time.

So does that mean online gaming is a “good thing”? The only thing wrong with it is that it is too easy to play. There you are at home or sitting in a hot spot with your wifi laptop and there is no-one to tap you on the shoulder to warn you that you are riding a losing streak into bankruptcy. But, so long as you have your gambling under control, you say when, where and how long you play. What can be better than that?

Online operators can afford to return more of the stake money to the players and still make a good profit. This means you get better odds on the slots and at the roulette table than you would in the real world. But even more importantly, once you are online, you can switch games at the click of a mouse. You no longer have to wait on other players or croupiers. There is always another game ready to play. Because you do not have people looking over your shoulder (and judging you), you have more freedom to learn new games or try out different strategies without people getting impatient with you. And finally, you can get free money. In the real world, you can get drinks, food and, sometimes, accommodation comped. Online, the only thing the casino can give you is a credit of money.

Then along came the internet with a whole lot more freedom. Although when you look around today there is a whole new bunch of casinos opening up, nothing really beats the convenience of sitting at home and playing your way through games in comfort. Yet, there is a “crackdown”. The US has been legislating. This has produced international litigation with Antigua taking action against the US. This is more action than you see in some casinos.

The Culture of Slots? What is it all about.

August 27th, 2008

When you join some kind of club, you’re almost always do this to make new friends. For the most part, folks join already knowing what their counterparts are like. Book clubs, movie groups, knitting circles… they all have terms and ideologies about their group’s topics that can be, well, predictable.

Slots is a little different thing. When you initially sign up with a casino online you find that you may be new to the terms and phrases. Things like “progressive slots” may go right over your head. When this happens, it is usually okay and common to ask questions and even get together with other online slots players.

After you begin to play slots online a few times and you learn more about the lingo that slots players use, you will find that you are not alone. There is a community of slots players who choose slots over any online casino or traditional casino game out there. There are levels of the slots community. Tiers of slots players begin with the novice player. Soon, you can build your way up to the professional level, that’s how easy it is to learn slots and develop a passion for winning money at the game.

When you are playing in a regular online casino, you will see other players look over when they see you struggling. They will always help you out if you have a question. In the beginning of the levels of slots online, you will see that there is always a willingness to help from more advance players. The culture of slots in traditional settings is a pretty uniform in comparison to online slots. While the majority of slots players in land based casinos are more inclined to drink or smoke given the social circumstances, online casino players will come in various shapes and sizes. Keep in mind that online casino players are playing from the convenience of their own homes and PCs.

The culture of slots online is a very unique one because it is made up of so many kinds of people. You can easily join a chat room or forum that deals with any online casino game, more specifically, slots online. Ask questions, discuss strategies, or just connect with folks who have the same gambling enthusiasm as you.
